VA Launches Claim Assist Portal — What Every Veteran in the Claims Pipeline Needs to Know Now

The Department of Veterans Affairs went live in late April 2026 with a new tool aimed squarely at one of the most frustrating bottlenecks in the disability claims process — and if you have a claim in the pipeline right now, you need to understand how it works before your next development letter shows up.

The VA Claim Assist Portal, officially announced March 4, 2026, gives veterans a direct digital channel to respond when VA needs additional information to move a claim forward. That back-and-forth step has long been a primary driver of processing delays. Before this portal existed, veterans had to respond by mail or navigate VA.gov on their own — burning days or weeks on logistics that had nothing to do with the merits of their claim.

How the Portal Works

When VA needs more information on your claim, you’ll get an email notification first, then an SMS text. The email contains a direct link to the portal and a temporary password. After logging in, the system sends a time-sensitive verification code to your email to confirm your identity. From there, the process is simple — you may need to check a box, type a short answer, or digitally sign a form. No scanning. No paper. No hold music.

Using the portal isn’t mandatory. Veterans can still respond by mail. But if speed matters — and if you’ve been waiting months for a decision, it should — the portal is the faster path.

One thing worth knowing: the Claim Assist Portal is accessible through the existing VA: Health and Benefits mobile app, available in both major app stores, but it also functions as a web-based portal reachable via the direct link in your notification email. Log in with ID.me or Login.gov — both are now the standard authentication methods on VA.gov as older systems like DS Logon and My HealtheVet are being phased out.

Why This Launch Matters Now

The portal arrives at a notable moment. On February 23, 2026, VA announced its overall disability compensation and pension backlog had fallen below 100,000 claims — the first time that number has been under six digits since May 2020. VA processed over 3 million disability and pension claims in FY2025 and hit the 1 million completions milestone for FY2026 on February 2, 2026, faster than in any prior fiscal year.

Processing speed has improved sharply, too. The average time to complete a disability claim has dropped from 141.5 days to 80.7 days — a 43 percent reduction — since the start of the second Trump Administration. Claims accuracy currently stands at 94.02 percent, the highest 12-month rate in two years.

“Under the leadership of President Trump, VA is focused on delivering Veterans, families, caregivers and survivors all of the benefits they’ve earned as quickly as possible. These tremendous improvements underscore that commitment.” — VA Secretary Doug Collins

The Claim Assist Portal is part of VA’s broader 5-Year IT Benefits Delivery Modernization Plan. The current phase runs through FY2027 and targets claims automation enablement — meaning this portal is infrastructure for a larger digital overhaul already underway, not the end point.

Scam Warning — Read This Before You Click Anything

Because the portal is triggered by email and uses temporary passwords and one-time codes, it looks a lot like the messages phishing scammers fabricate. VA has published explicit guidance on this: VA will never ask you to share your Social Security number by email. Any legitimate portal link will route you to VA.gov. If something looks off, report it before clicking anything.

For benefits-related scams, call 833-388-7233. For health care scams, call 866-842-4357. Both lines are available 24/7.

What You Should Do Right Now

If you have an active disability claim, a few steps are worth taking today. First, make sure VA has your current email address on file — that’s the trigger point for portal notifications. Second, download the VA: Health and Benefits app and confirm you can log in with ID.me or Login.gov. Third, if you need help building or managing a claim, reach out to a Veterans Service Organization. The VFW, American Legion, and DAV all provide free claims assistance with no strings attached.

If your claim involves VA Form 21-526EZ (updated January 2026), a supplemental claim on Form 20-0995, or you’ve already filed VA Form 21-0966 to protect your effective date, the Claim Assist Portal could be the difference between your case moving in days versus sitting for weeks waiting on a mailed response.

The backlog is down. The tools are improving. Use them.
